Publishing our Stakeholder Report on Electrical Stunning in Mediterranean Aquaculture

We’re pleased to share our new report, Electrical Stunning in Mediterranean Sea Bream and Sea Bass Aquaculture: A Multi-stakeholder Analysis.
This study brings together insights from 27 producers, retailers, certification bodies, and equipment manufacturers to map the barriers, opportunities, and future direction of humane slaughter practices in the Mediterranean.
Our key findings show a sector moving toward electrical stunning—driven by upcoming certification requirements from GLOBALG.A.P. (2025) and ASC (2027) and by early adopters demonstrating successful implementation and quality gains.
Some highlights:
Compatibility is higher than expected: 86% of surveyed producers already operate vessels compatible with existing stunning solutions.
Costs remain manageable: Economic modelling suggests an increase of only 0.10%–0.28% in farm sales prices.
Main barriers: Upfront investment costs, which can be partly offset through available government support.
What’s needed next: Expanded funding schemes, more cost-effective equipment options, and increased technical support to help producers transition.
The report provides a detailed look at industry perspectives, current adoption, stakeholder motivations, and what is required for wider implementation over the coming years.
